Because after Zeta, Kamille’s tragedy shook Bright to the core and he learned that maybe oppressive discipline by force isn’t exactly the best way to raise a military, even if it’s worked in the past.

Plus the only person he’s hit since Zeta was Hathaway, which was for other reasons besides Bright being a Captain and Hathaway being a soldier.

The fact of the matter is, Bright didn’t need to slap Banagher. Banagher did nothing wrong. Hell if anything, Bright did so much BETTER in Unicorn 5. He fucked up everything his superior’s planned just for the reason being that he didn’t care for what they were doing.

Bright is a badass of immeasurable quality, but it’s not just because he punches teenagers.

also I’d imagine getting punched by Judau made him realize “Ow, that hurts! Man, is that what I’ve been doing to my subordinates all this time? I should stop that…”
