Oh gosh anon, there are dozens of people who would probably be more qualified to help you, but I’ll do my best! I don’t blame you for being confused. There’s almost 40 years worth of shows and multiple timelines, but once you break it down its pretty simple!
The original and main Gundam timeline is referred to as the Universal Century (UC for short). Most people who want to get into Gundam usually start here, although there’s a lot to watch. Here’s a list of UC Gundam shows in production order (rather than chronological order, since that can get a bit confusing).
- Mobile Suit Gundam (Gundam 0079)
- Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
- Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
- Char’s Counterattack
- Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
- Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory
- Mobile Suit Gundam F91
- Mobile Suit Victory Gundam
- Gundam: The 08th MS Team
- Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn
I bolded the ones that are usually considered the most popular and the most important in terms of understanding the timeline. If you skip over any of these shows, later productions might be a little unclear, since UC Gundam is fairly plot and politics heavy. There are also a few other movies and OVAs that I left out, but they’re not essential. This list is probably a good starting point for anyone who wants to try it out.
There are 3-part compilation movies for both 0079 and Zeta Gundam, which you could watch instead of the TV series, but the Zeta Gundam movies have an alternate ending that doesn’t really fit in with canon, so I would advise against that.
If you don’t feel like diving straight into UC Gundam, you could always begin with a Non-UC Gundam series. Many people usually watch Wing or G first, and each series has a different feel to it.
- Mobile Fighter G Gundam
- Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (and Endless Waltz)
- After War Gundam X
- Turn A Gundam
- Mobile Suit Gundam SEED/SEED Destiny
- Mobile Suit Gundam 00
- Mobile Suit Gundam AGE
- Gundam Build Fighters
Personally, I believe that there’s a Gundam series for everyone. The Gundam franchise is so diverse and each show is unique in its own way! If you don’t like one, there’s probably another one that would be more enjoyable for you.
I hope this answer wasn’t too confusing or overwhelming for you, anon! If you’d like any personal suggestions or recommendations, or if you have any more questions, feel free to send me another message, and I’d be happy to share my opinions and elaborate on anything. I hope this helps!
