People wanna know what being a trans woman is like. It’s like this: you’re a knife thrower’s assistant. Except that you’re not part of an act, you’re just walking around minding your own business. You’re not at the circus; you’re at the grocery store or the movies or waiting for the bus. And it’s not a trained, professional knife thrower with whom you’ve practiced for years and developed an intimate bond of trust. It’s just random strangers hucking knives at you, seeing how close they can get. It’s funny to them if you’re caught off guard, if you show fear. You’re not supposed to wince or cry out, you’re just supposed to stand there and smile. People around you get mad at YOU if you’re not a good sport about it. If you turn to them and shout “FOR GOD’S SAKE HELP ME! THIS ISN’T AN ACT! I DON’T KNOW THIS MAN!!” they’ll scoff and shrug, “you’re never going to build an audience with that kind of attitude.”

Some days, nothing happens. Other days, it’s one knife right after the other, WHACK! WHAM! One might graze your cheek or cut the strap of your dress. And everyone laughs and cheers, because it’s all in good fun and you’re asking for it anyway, dressed like that. And sometimes the knife thrower’s been drinking, sometimes he’s feeling mean and spiteful and he really, really wants to put on a show, so he aims as close to your throat as he can, WHAM! And all you can do, all anyone will let you do, is wonder if you’ve finally met the one who’s going to hit you in the heart or the neck or the eye and say, “whoops.”

That’s what it’s like.

When you discuss the wage gap, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Only white women make $0.77 to a man’s dollar.
  • Black women make about $0.68 to a man’s dollar.
  • Latina women make about $0.58 to a man’s dollar.

Intersectionality matters.

I will keep reblogging this to point out that disabled people, including men, make 22 cents on the dollar. Mostly because it is legal to pay us below minimum wage, but whatevs.

Original post is somewhat false. That only applies to white, black, and latina cis women. Of those trans women that are lucky enough to be employed (usually white) the average is $0.68 to a man’s dollar. Keep in mind though, that vast swaths of trans women (especially twoc) aren’t able to find legal sources of income at all, and thus aren’t even included in the study. If they were, that number would be far lower (exactly how much further, I don’t have the data to say, but given the number of us that are forced to engage in sex work just to survive, [one study pegged it around 2/3] no number would be too low to surprise me.)

Morgan M Page/Odofemi, 2015

Presented at Squirts at La MaMa Experimental Theatre (NYC)

While a supercut of scenes from popular films and television, such as The Crying Game, Ace Ventura, and Family Guy, depicting men vomiting at the sight of trans women’s bodies plays, the artist quickly eats a bowl of jell-o and (successfully) attempts to force herself to throw up.

“I am Dil’s unexpressed transsexual rage.”

was there

the audience was laughing at the opening clip of stewy saying transmisogynistic old saws on family guy, scary right

she was great

I can’t believe this post has gotten over 700 notes in just a few short hours. Who knew throwing up for art was #trending right now?

“Don’t worry everyone! It’s not really transmisogynistic, because the character in question wasn’t actually trans! Just an evil man pretending to be a woman for nefarious purposes! Because it’s not like that, in and of itself, is also a transmisogynistic stereotype!”

7957) Being a woman without a vagina is beyond frustrating sexually, emotionally and trying to have a romantic relationship with others. It makes very difficult to love myself. I feel unwhole.

pro tip: if you’re a mature functioning adult don’t fucking ask trans kids what their birth names are

Society often blurs the lines between drag queens and trans women. This is highly problematic, because many people believe that, like drag queens, trans women go home, take off their wigs and chest plates, and walk around as men. Trans womanhood is not a performance or costume.

“Janet, you know how much I love you. I look up to you as a big sister. And this book really, in my eyes, made me see myself as not just the one who went through my experience alone. Every time I would read a page in your book, it would be like a black and white scene of a movie in my head of my life, of something that you experienced that I’ve experienced in some way. It’s really hard for me to express myself to people when it comes to experiences that I had whether it be good or bad. And for you to have written a book about that is really a blessing. It’s like…this is like the ten commandments for us right now. Like literally. It speaks truth. And with truth comes freedom.” - CeCe McDonald

Part of what Cece McDonald said to Janet Mock in regards to her important, exquisitely written, groundbreaking book about being a trans woman of colour, Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More. Quote is from The Barnard Center For Research on Women annual salon that featured several panelists.

Oh, CeCe. I love that girl.
