Pro-top for fanfic writers: cissexism and transphobia are neither funny nor sexy

eshusplayground:

Here’s a quick way to find out if your fic is cissexist and/or transphobic.

  • If the punchline is “she has a dick!”…
  • If the Huge Plot Twist is “she has a dick!”…
  • If you’re copying futanari bullshit from hentai…
  • If you’re reducing gender to genitalia…

…it’s more than likely you’re doing something cissexist, and/or transphobic, which is gross and dehumanizing.

Now, this does not mean you should never write about trans* people. We need more fic about trans* people. But we don’t need more shit that dehumanizes them by reducing them to their genitals and treating them like freakshow exhibits.

ETA: Before anyone asks, no, I’m not linking to examples because I don’t need to subject people to that ugly shit just to satisfy idle curiosity.

*gets on soap box*

To all my fellow cosplayers/ gamers/ nerds…. What happened to being happy with you and the things you can control? Why all the drama? Why all the disrespect? Why does everyone want to be “known”, yet very few want to work for it? I’ve only been cosplaying for 3 years, and in that short time i’ve seen people go from fun loving geeks to catty backstabbing morons.

If you “make it to the top”, then BRAVO, but don’t act like you’re owed anything just because you have nice photo’s and a fancy f#ckin’ outfit. You are not a hollywood celebrity…you are not Bill gates rich from cosplaying, you will probably never see yourself in fortune 500 magazine……you are a NERD…just a fancy nerd. Nothing that you do or wear gives you the right to act like an a$$ to people, especially not to your friends & those who look-up to you.

If your friend “makes it to the top”, be freakin’ happy for them! Your job as a friend is to be there as support and to keep your “famous” friend grounded. If you call yourself a friend, then be a f#ckin’ friend and cut the crybaby bullsh*t out! Stop being freakin’ emo about not being in the spot light or having to “share” your friend.

To the “computer tough guys”, Stop making up dumb ass 4chan post &/ spreading malicious rumors. Stop worrying about destroying someone else’s name and work on building up your own skills or taking care of your own responsibilities. What kind of sense does it make to spew hate and then cry about how no one cares about you?! If you have LEGIT issues with someone, tell them straight up! If you do and that person doesn’t listen, that’s cool…drop ‘em and go on with your life.

Bottom line, at the end of the day we’re all nerds, and we should have mutual respect, understanding and love for one another. If you’re upset by this post, then maybe you need to examine why you’re so mad and correct yourself before you lose all the people who can stand to be around your crazy a$$.

(fyi, no i don’t think i’m a saint, i’ve done dumb crap too.)

Dear everyone working on Otakon stuff right now:

Please don’t stress yourself out.

I know better then most people how easy it is to be so caught up in finishing a costume that you start sacrificing your mental or even physical health for it. But remember this:

Cosplay is a hobby. A hobby is supposed to be fun.

Yes, there are exceptions to this, for people doing commissions or who make their money at conventions. But the vast majority of cosplayers do it as a hobby. Now, this isn’t saying you shouldn’t cosplay if it stresses you out even a bit, but the week before a convention isn’tsupposed to feel like it’s going to kill you. No one should have their health effected by a hobby.

If you’re losing sleep from working 24/7, if you have a panic attack thinking about what you need to get done, if you getsickfrom working so hard?

Stop. Take a step back. Relax.

No costume is worth your health. It’s alright to back out of a costume if you find out you can’t do it. Yes, it sucks to have to drop out of a group or tell someone you aren’t doing a costume, butyour health is more important thencosplay.

When something comes out that I don’t want spoiler’d, I just avoid social networking sites until I’ve either seen what’s so important or I stop caring about being spoiler’d.

It never occurred to me to get actively angry at the people who are enjoying their love of said important thing on the social networking sites I voluntarily go on that no one but myself is forcing me to look at, and making them feel bad for enjoying it openly, y’know, the thing social networks were made to do.
