Here’s the thing about Madoka:
You could have EASILY done this kind of plot with toku heroes or giant robots or whatever. Really, if anything, the story would have suited those genres more (especially since Madoka’s fate is kinda like the Getter Team in Getter Robo Armageddon, but less fun).
But it wouldn’t have been special.
Using this kind of story for magical girls gives it a greater impact; a greater emotion. The story better suits the hero/mecha genres because you expect that kind of story from them. You sure as hell don’t expect this kind of story from magical girls.
So yeah, I… definitely liked this show more than I expected.
Now let’s see how long they milk this franchise… D:
