Things (a small group of) childed people need to know about childless people
- It is possible to have a sense of morality without being responsible for another human life.
- It is possible to consider someone more important than yourself through life experiences other than parenting.
- Saying everyone needs a child to feel fulfilled is like saying everyone needs to take the same prescription drugs to be healthy.
- The decision to have a child is not a sign of irresponsibility. A sign of irresponsibility would be choosing to have a child even if we personally feel we would not make a good parent.
- Having a child has not made you omniscient. You have no way of knowing if we will ‘change our minds someday.’
- Choosing to not have kids is not the same as believing kids shouldn’t exist.
- Being happy without children does not invalidate your happiness with children.
- We do not hate parents. We hate people who think they know what’s best for us.
- People like you, who believe parenting makes you superior, are in the minority. Good and loving and dedicated parents are more concerned with looking after their own families than constructing them for others. Many of these good and loving and dedicated parents feel they need to say not all parents are like you. They don’t need to apologise. We know you’re not the norm.
- Not everyone chooses to be childless. Many are unable to have children for any number of reasons. Think before you judge someone without children — you may well be pouring salt in a wound.
