Anthem Blue Cross Releases Transgender Health Plan Benefits -

The article is uh, ftm-biased in the surgeries they list but, yes, the do supposedly cover vaginoplasty. According to my roommate, this is one of the most common health plans out here so I just might be able to get/afford it.

So generally when I have to talk to my parents about ~trans stuff~, I do it by writing them a letter, mostly because whenever I try to actually TALK to them about these sorts of things, they change the fucking subject and start attacking me.

Since I intend to get my name changed within the next few weeks, I’ve prepared what is hopefully the last letter I ever have to write to them.

I’d like some input if at all possible.

Why is ‘trap’ considered bad?

relenawarcraft:

mtfproblems:

Answer from the mods at MTF Problems:

““Trap” implies a deceitful trans*girl. It’s very offensive to be called a ‘trap’ because no trans* girl wants to just be “that girl with the penis”, which is what ‘trap’ means. It’s not a nice term, and none of us (the mods) like the term, nor do we agree with it or condone it with our friends, family, significant others, acquaintances, and etc.”

Answer from the lovely Chloe:

““Trap” implies a deceitful trans*girl.” Worse than that, it implies Deceitful Guy pretending to be a girl just to get straight guys to feel attracted to them. It suggests that the only reason we would be Trans* is that we want to trick people into arousal. Trap means, “That guy who looks like a girl.” rather than “that girl with the penis”, I can deal being the latter but not the former. It’s not just suggestive of deceit. It’s invalidation. Self ID as Trap is fine imo, but the term is abused.

Reblogging this cuz, well, it’s important.

see I was a stupid kid once and used that term for myself.

If you remember me about five years ago, I was a hella camwhore/attention whore. I posted pictures of myself that I really shouldn’t have all just for the attention.

These days, I regret the hell out of it. I damaged any chance of a reputation I could’ve had simply by being a stupid teenager on the Internet. Yeah, we all were, but my face was attached to it. The Internet isn’t written in pencil, it’s written in ink, as they say.

I really wish I never used that term, and could just go back in time and smack myself.

2124) To anyone who thinks trans* women appreciate “tranny chasers” and people who fetishize us, newsflash: we don’t. I’ll die alone before I settle for someone who likes me only because I’m trans. The words and phrases shemale, ladyboy, trap, tranny, sissyboy, transie, futa, futanari, shim, the pronoun “it”, or chick with a dick are all offensive. Don’t use them. To tranny chasers: I don’t need you. There’s plenty of people who I can be with that won’t treat me as a sex object. So leave me alone.

I know a (cis) girl who only dates trans women and she refuses to say she’s a chaser.

2096) I hate seeing transwomen younger than me who’ve already transitioned. I think I’m insanely jealous that they’ve probably had their shit together, known themselves, transistioned at a perfect age, and now look and feel much better. I’ve wasted 6 years of my life in confusion, anxiety, and depression. I still feel younger inside, but the truth is that I’ll never get those 6 years back.

so last week I talked to this kid who’s in charge of the school newspaper for some article he’s writing on transgender people (he’s been talking with me and a trans guy on campus)

one of the first things he asks me is

“How long did you live as a gay man before transitioning?”

….

yeah.

I was like WHOOOOOOA BACK THE FUCK UP THERE and explained to him why that isn’t really true (in fact, why these days, it's rarely true.)

man, people really don’t get it, do they? It’s a shame how many of the old stereotypes still persist…

“I’m not transmisogynistic, I have FTM friends!” is the equivalent of saying, “I don’t hate black people, I have Asian friends!”

If you misgender one of your trans friends and they call you out on it, do not, I repeat, do NOT get defensive. Why? Because doing so makes it look like you think them being trans is their fault. It is not. If you get called out on this, apologize, tell them you weren’t thinking (not that you “slipped”), and ENSURE that you will not let this happen again. Thinking before you speak isn’t as hard as it sounds.

Thank you.
