This particular gif is from his work on the cold open to Gundam 0080, one of my favorite mecha combat sequences in Gundam. It’s spectacularly well animated thanks to his unique process of “full limited” animation, his drawing of each individual cel by himself as much as possible, and his magnificent command of timing. The way he animates with a continuous flow of inertia rather than the typical moving between poses makes believable war machines that aren’t weightless figures but gigantic instruments of war—underscoring the central theme of 0080. His style of animation would go on to influence many more animators.

I think I’ll make a post later where I discuss his work more in depth. In the mean time, have a smattering of my favorite fight sequences from him.
