so the last final i did in my last semester of college was for intro to women’s studies and it was a presentation on stuff we took away from the semester

what i took away was “y’all are bad at doin history”

also important to note, Janice Raymond is to be blamed for having trans health care removed as medically necessary in the States. Prior to that, GRS and/or HRT could be covered under insurance policies, but due to Raymond’s meddling, thousands of transgender USians are left w/out a means of paying for surgery or hormones.

and her thesis adviser was none other than noted transmisogynist mary daly

Oh wow. Had no idea.

Also bear in mind that:

a) she’s still around and hasn’t rescinded her views
b) her views on sex and sexuality are generally abominable
c) her views on sex work are actively dangerous, as she’s part of the abolitionist ‘all sex work is violence against women’ movement, which upholds the ‘rescue’ industry, ie, an industry that takes vulnerable women from sex work and frequently into forced labour

In short, janice Raymond sucks

legitimate criticisms of feminism:

-transmisogyny and the lack of inclusion of transwomen

-the racist history behind it and the lack of inclusion of woc

-ignoring and invalidating women with disabilities

-pretty much anything that falls under lack of intersectionality

-internalized misogyny and girl hate

-promotion of political lesbianism

-radscum

illegitimate criticisms of feminism:

-a feminist was really mean to me once

-they’re sexist against men

There’s one that was forgotten, a legitimate criticism of feminism is that become such a large and splintered ideology that you’re going to get a thousand different explanations from different people.

maybe instead of complaining “not all men are like that”

you should be saying “too many men are like that”

because when you say not all men are like that what you’re telling us is that you care more about your feelings than you do about our safety

and that’s some shit right there

Boop boop be doop!

Feminist characters from Tomino-created Gundam

So upon reading this title, you’re probably gonna go, “What? You’re crazy.” Well, there’s been a lot of discussion lately on the value of female fans from Gundam, and the fact that well, we’ve always been here. More often than not Gundam, at least shows directed by the original creator, features many rather empowered women characters. They’re more than your stock female characters in anime, especially for the time, and aren’t your stereotypical “strong female characters” either. I also figure this would be a great addendum to the “hey you should all watch Gundam” post. I’m going to be listing off five characters, plus one honorable mention. Here we go!

Honorable Mention: Roux Louka (Gundam ZZ)

image

Well, of COURSE I was going to have Roux on here! But no, she deserves to be here. Roux’s personality is best described as “the spitfire”. She takes no shit from anyone on the show, and spends a lot of interactions in the series telling an obnoxious creeper to fuck off. Roux is also very proud of her femininity, and knows when to use it; like her classic quote “A cool gal who screws up occasionally is adorable.” Roux doesn’t make the final list because of that stretch of episodes where she acts incredibly rude and insensitive to Judau, which actually turns a lot of people off from her character.

#5: Frau Bow (Mobile Suit Gundam)

image

This is a character I bet you didn’t expect to see on the list. Frau is often perceived as weak, but she’s not: she’s more complex than that. She’s the closest we see to more stereotypical anime women in the genre, namely Sayaka Yumi from Mazinger Z. Frau isn’t one dimensional: you see her crying over the loss of her family, risking her life to go find Amuro, and even telling Amuro that if he’s going to be whiny and mopey all day, she’ll take out the Gundam and fight herself.
SEE ALSO: Fa Yuiry (Zeta Gundam)

#4: Marbet Fingerhat (Victory Gundam)

image

Known as “The Children’s Crusade” in fandom, Victory Gundam also has a smattering of female characters on both sides, most notably League Militaire’s all-female Shrike Team. Marbet is the leading fighting lady in Victory, and stands out among the rest for a few reasons: Marbet is the only main character we ever seen pregnant in a Gundam series, and she continues to fight regardless; she becomes a caring mother figure for Usso and the rest of the cast, and of course, she’s the only black woman in such a role in all of Gundam! Victory Gundam is the first (and pretty much only) Gundam series with a considerable amount of black characters. Good on Tomino, for that one.

#3: Emma Sheen (Zeta Gundam)

image

Everybody loves Emma. It’s kind of hard not to. She’s the first turncoat character in a Gundam series, and the first main fighting woman who uses a mobile suit. Emma’s fills a mentor role, similar to Quattro, but manages to be much stricter about it.Throughout the series, Emma develops a relationship with Captain Henken, and while it is he who’s after her, it’s clear that she is the dominant one in the relationship, brushing off the majority of his advances. They’re both comrades first, and lovers second.
SEE ALSO: Sayla Mass (Mobile Suit Gundam). Sayla is actually left off the list because of her lack of development beyond the original series. Had she appeared in Zeta and CCA, she would’ve most certainly ended up here.

#2: Haman Karn (Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ)

image

Oh yes. It’s Haman. Haman is the first female villain to have a leading role in the Gundam universe, and she takes it across TWO SERIES. Haman is sneaky. Haman is empowered, but someone who suffers and has suffered in the past. Power is her essence, whether she wants it or not. When she ended up in the position of power, she took it and milked it til it was dry. Instead of using the “woman in power” archetype to see if she was capable of doing it, she KNEW she could do it, and oh yes, she did.

#1: Queen Dianna Soriel (Turn A Gundam)

image

Without a doubt, the #1 female character throughout the entire Gundam franchise is Dianna Soriel. Despite the appearance of a twenty year-old girl, Dianna has lived for hundreds of years thanks to cryogenic stasis. At the start of the series we see her as a cold and distant, yet powerful, ruler that is revered by all. She meets an Earthrace woman named Kihel Heim who is essentially her doppelganger, and the two of them switch places. While in the place of this civilian girl from another culture, she learns the true consequences of attacking people who are essentially innocent civilians. I don’t want to give too much about the series away, but there is one moment in the series where her character is truly defined while she is in the role of Kihel. Queen Dianna is easily the most multifaceted woman we see throughout the entire Gundam franchise.

Sociologists use the term “androcentrism” to refer to a new kind of sexism, one that replaces the favoring of men over women with the favoring of masculinity over femininity. According to the rules of androcentrism, men and women alike are rewarded, but only insofar as they are masculine (e.g., they play sports, drink whiskey, and are lawyers or surgeons w00t!). Meanwhile, men are punished for doing femininity and women… well, women are required to do femininity and simultaneously punished for it.

Androcentrism: It’s Okay to Be a Boy, but Being a Girl… » Sociological Images

I think the ‘women are required to do femininity and simultaneously punished for it’ bit sums up 90% of sexism in one sentence. (via shashirosa)

basically radical feminists in a nutshell

TW: Discussion of cissexism, rape. But just a weekly reminder.

breewriteswords:

Just a weekly reminder that if you

  • refer to “designated male at birth privilege” instead of “male privilege”
  • state that trans women have privilege because they are “male socialized”
  • start to go on some pseudo-scientific diatribe about how penises are inherently oppressive
  • start a statement with “I’m not saying trans women aren’t women, [but]/[I’m just saying]/[you just have to admit]…”
  • state that a woman who does not have a vaginal opening “can’t be raped”
  • wish to have a “cis women’s only” safe space
  • ever under any circumstances use the term “woman-born-woman”

Then you are one of the many reasons feminism today has a bad name. You are pushing people who truly have something meaningful to say away. You are silencing the experiences of those more oppressed than you. You are what you claim to hate.
