I really agree with you, anon. I don’t think lots of the fans remember that humanity is at its last limbs, and they can’t afford to mess around. I’d expect that the titan shifters are in an equally dire situation; one where they can’t afford to lose a game-changing battle.
As Erwin stated in the recent chapter, “If we lose Eren then humanity will never be able to have a future, living on this earth.” Armin can’t afford to tip-toe around Bert’s feelings because they used to be buddies. Mikasa can’t afford to spare Ymir’s life just because she used to not be a traitor. Erwin can’t afford to cry about his lost limb when there was a brilliant opportunity to cut Eren free and escape with the soldiers they still had.
Alternatively, Ymir, Bert, Reiner and Annie clearly have more than just the wish to go back home. Their mission is a mystery, but the fact they’re fighting so hard, and that BRA have all shown just how guilty they feel for their actions(Bert in the latest chapters, Reiner in Uthgard before he was revealed to be the Armored Titan, and Annie right before getting caught), and if there were not high stakes on their mission, they clearly would have given up by now. You can’t just say they’re bad because they’re in the middle of an all-out war.
I think it might be because the fandom is so obsessed with shipping and loving their favorite characters that they often don’t have a grasp on the plot. This is a storyline where a man gets his arm bit off and continues to fight to retake the one person who will prevent humanity’s downfall. Where a woman who suffers burns, scratches, and most likely broken bones and internal bleeding to the point where she can only crawl gives the entire military and legion a game plan because she knows how important it is they don’t lose. Where a man has his legs chewed to the point where they’re horrifyingly mangled and still tries to get to his feet and kill the titan in front of him because humanity ‘can’t lose hope.’
The storyline quite clearly revolves around an all-out war that can’t be lost.
It’s not understandable in the least when people let their feelings about their character cloud their judgement and make them detest anyone who fights against them to try and win a battle. And it goes to show how much of the fandom is actually interested in the plot, rather than just the characters…
My rant below might upset you. Ignore this if you’re easily offended.
I’m coming back solely to reblog this post as an accurate summary as to why I refuse to join the snk fandom. The dark, moral-challenging plot is being lost within this fandom to shipping, twerking, and superficial enjoyment of the anime’s beauty. Now, this isn’t a problem if it was done within moderation, but this entire fandom is crack. The moment I read SNK, I knew there was more to its popularity than “a great story”. Not many people are capable of enjoying a series like this. There is a deep plot that is overshadowed. If the anime was drawn in the exact same method as the manga (dark and rough), I guarantee you this fandom would not be as large.
Of all the snk I’ve seen on my dash in the past few months, this is one of about 3 posts I’ve seen that REALLY shows ANY appreciation for the plot or what these characters are actually going through outside of “the pain of a death that ruins my ship”. It hurts me, as a fan of horror or psychological manga, that I can barely find a friend within this fandom who doesn’t analyze a plot point to promote why ereri is canon or why marco is going to come back from the dead for jean. Shipping and comedy isn’t a bad thing - but damn. Can I find one friend who can take a step back from the forefront of shipping and just enjoy the PLOT with me.
Can we talk about Hannah and Franz? How about Ilse? How about the mutated looking titans that we have no explanation for yet?
People who talk about those are who I wanna be friends with, yo.
basically….a bit of fun isn’t bad…
but really guys, come on…thats pretty much all this fandom is turning out to be. ONLY crack and jokes and whatnot, and it’s kinda….disheartening.
i quite enjoy telling people my theories about the plot and what might happen or things we might discover, and talking about the characters depths and all. And it really excites me to see someone else make long posts about the same things, it fuels my thoughts and it’s a great thing to read…as rare as it is.
SnK is NOT fluffy, and it’s not a happy series. It’s very dark and foreboding. It’s full of death, blood, grit, war, and crazy psychological crap and the art style lends a hand at making the series even darker and grittier. It’s also full of desperation on both sides of this war- the humans and the titan shifters both have their reasons for what they’re doing, and it’s very, very brutal.
I personally partake in shipping myself. I enjoy reading fics, looking at fanart, and coming up with headcanons for my pairings…but i don’t let that cloud my mind on what the /actual/ story is, which like i said, is very brutal and something that should not be taken lightly.
And like i said, there’s nothing wrong with having fun and cracking jokes…we all need a break from dark things ww but…this is getting a little out of hand and i feel like a lot of people are joining the fandom solely for the crack and shipping, when thats not what Shingeki no Kyojin is about /at all/.
