Day 6 - Least favorite OVA / movie

yeah… I’ve gotta say 0083. It’s just… the Phantom Menace of Gundam. It’s supposed to be this cool Zeta Gundam prequel but the only Zeta stuff we actually get to see are brief appearances of Bask and Jamitov in the last episode, a five-second Haman cameo, and the Titans for about five seconds. The show is filled with flat characters and glaring inconsistencies (how did Nina date Gato and have NO IDEA who he was in the first episode?). It’s got some great imagery and animation, for sure (like the episode with the Afrika Corps), but overall, it just feels like a waste of time.

Also, 0080 did a pretty good job at making all of its mobile suits no more than redesigns, not specific units (though that was obviously retconned)… then 0083 had to screw everything up by putting the original Gelgoog, GM, and Ball in the same series as the 0080 Rick Dom and the new designs for the Zaku, GM, Dom, and Gelgoog! But whatever, at least it means more kits…

For the record, 08th MS Team is a close second for least favorite OVA, but that’s another story.

If you don’t love 0080 well… you have no soul.

THIS is how Gundam OVAs should be done: tell a story that wouldn’t work as a traditional series. Give us a perspective you can’t really do with Gundam. That’s why 0080 succeeds; you’re given the neutral perspective of a young kid, who gets to see the Federation and Zeon soldiers for what they truly are: human beings.

Day 4 - Least favorite Gundam series

yeah I hate to sound cliche but well

weeeeelll

Destiny was a mess. Early on, it had some pretty good potential, with the first enlisted main character, a female captain who actually FIT THE CAPTAIN ROLE, SEED characters returning in smaller/different roles (Yzak and Dearka are still two of my all-time favorite characters), etc. But everything slowly started declining when Kira and Lacus rejoined the picture. That’s when it stopped being the NEW Gundam SEED series, and became the OLD Gundam SEED series, just the second part. I’d rather watch G-Saviour than see the character assassination in that last arc. Bleugh. Shin would’ve been a great main character if he actually got to develop, and, you know…

BE THE MAIN CHARACTER.

Day 3 - Favorite Gundam Series

This is a toughie. It’s going to be a tie between the original series for being such a timeless classic that completely reshaped anime as we know it, or Turn A Gundam, for being a wonderful character story that turned (hur hur) Gundam’s tropes on their heads.

Day 2 - How you discovered Gundam

now I bet you’re confused by the Pokemon picture… Well, before I even saw the commercials for the Wing kits on TV, I saw an advertisement for the manga version of 0079 on the back of one of the comic-style Pokemon mangas. I remember the tagline being something like, “One teen. One robot. One chance to save the Earth from civil war”, and saying something stupid like, “That’s silly, they didn’t have robots when Abraham Lincoln was around!”

I was a dumb kid sometimes…

Day 1 - Very first Gundam series you watched

What else did you expect? I was ten. =P Yeah, when I was ten I learned on the playground of this TV show block called “Toonami” with these shows on it called “Gundam Wing” and “Dragon Ball Z”. I’d heard of Gundam Wing before through model kit commercials, but I wasn’t aware of a TV series. Needless to say, I got hooked pretty quickly.

Regardless of my feelings for Gundam Wing as an adult, it still has a special place in my heart for getting me into all this crazy stuff in the first place.
