PROFESSOR YUMI TRIED TO KILL HIMSELF TWICE AS A CONFLICT MEDIATION TACTIC HOW DOES HE RUN A LAB UGH
I WAS ACTUALLY ABOUT TO ASK YOU IF WORKING ON TRANSLATIONS MADE YOU REALIZE JUST HOW AWFUL HE REALLY IS OR IF I WAS JUST CRAZY
Okay no, I was just gonna reply to this again but let me explain everyone a thing about Gennosuke Yumi.
I seriously do not know how this guy got where he is and how the world is still in one piece when he’s in charge of the group keeping it safe. Koji is arguably more competent than Yumi, and Koji tried to make out with a cyborg and let himself get beaten blind over a puppy.
I’m 12 episodes away from finishing my work on the show, so let’s review.
1. He worked with Dr. Hell for years without realising he was a mad scientist. The guy has purple skin, crazy Einstein hair, and HIS NAME ACTUALLY IS DR. HELL. THAT IS NOT A SUPERVILLAIN NAME HE CHOSE. He and. Dr. Kabuto KNEW this guy, and even Koji’s grandpa at least had an inkling that something was up.
2. He thinks the best way to protect his daughter in battle is to keep her robot basically unarmed. Is this some passive-aggressive way to make her step down? Is he more worried about her being involved with violence than actually dying? I mean, at least when she upgraded to Diana A he allowed them to make it actually useful (after some convincing).
3. Except for that time when he made her choose between going out in a blaze of glory or essentially being disowned. When I worked on the edit, I had his words to her be ‘Make me proud to be your father.’ The LITERAL translation was ‘Don’t make me ashamed to be your father.’ Both are accurate, but given the episode was already pretty tense and we were meant to focus on Sayaka’s badassery, I made an executive decision to go for the more ‘positive’ connotation.
4. As mentioned above, he has tried to kill himself as a form of conflict mediation. Not in some sort of reckless hot-blooded way, not to ‘go down with the ship’ (though he does that once an episode), but because he legitimately feels that offing himself will somehow enable the rest of the Institute to handle things. I can’t even begin to sort out this mentality but he’s got a serious death wish.
5. He believes the villains when they tell obvious lies. You know, the old ‘Give us all your Japanium and we’ll let you live’ sort of thing. He BUYS IT. The KIDS have to tell him not to trust the bad guys.
6. He willingly employs the help of a junk robot that his three top men were threatened into building. Seriously, Boss holds the three professors at (water)gun point, makes them build the shittiest robot in existence, and what does Yumi do? Scrap that shit because it’s a waste of resources? No. He EMPLOYS it. And KEEPS employing it.
7. He forgets that mecha monsters exist. He’s always surprised when they show up, like he was expecting Godzilla or some shit instead.
8. He built a barrier that does not work and keeps insisting on putting it up anyway.
9. He lets a ten year old boy run around the lab. Self-explanatory.
Honestly the only thing Yumi has going for him is the fact that he’s voiced by the same guy as Boyacky from Yatterman.
