i am all for headcanon but i really think a lot of people don’t understand what the actual meaning of headcanon is.

headcanon is not ‘i don’t like this part of canon. in my opinion it should be different so i’m just going to replace it with what i think it should be’.

headcanon is ‘canon has never specified/is ambiguous about this specific thing, so i’m going to fill in the gap with my own reasonable guesses’.

eta since there’s been some confusion in the reblogs: the former thing is fine- i actually have no problem with it! but the proper term for it is ‘AU’, as in alternate universe, not ‘headcanon’. when you want to override an aspect of canon to adapt to your preferences, it becomes an AU. this post is not about who should do what or how, because people are free to enjoy a canon in whatever manner they please- it’s about the proper meaning and function of the term ‘headcanon’, which is very often misused on this site.
