I give you–Misgendering on Facebook!

It astounds me, absolutely astounds me, that I have been going by “Sophia” and using female pronouns among my friends for four years, and yet I still get misgendered by them. He since edited the post and apologized, but I’m leaving what I said there. There was also this exchange in FB messages:

Me: Dude I am seriously not happy with this. Let me explain: Misgendering isn’t cool because it shows that the person who did it doesn’t see that person as their actual gender on a subconscious level. Now I’m not psychiatrist, but I’ve seen this happen enough to notice this. Him: I know, and the thing is, I know how you want to be identified. I do. Just…didn’t think for a minute. And I know that’s no excuse, but I’m very sorry for the discomfort I caused you. Me: Do you ever not think when it comes to the pronouns of your friends who aren’t transgender? Him: Not usually, no. But I definitely will from now on.    So for those of you who accuse me of “cis bigotry”, here’s just a reminder of the shit that I–and many other trans people–have to put up with.
