Mobile Suit Gundam

April 7th marks the 34th anniversary of the series that started it all, Mobile Suit Gundam.

This is what we dedicated Gundam fans owe it all to. From the trope of our masked villain to the teenage pilots behind the controls of the mecha, this is what started it all.

Mobile Suit Gundam was at it’s time back in the late 70’s, a departure from the norm of robot anime. The series before it were all about Giant robots that were full of glitz and flashy moves and explosions. But Tomino sought to change that with a more humanoid mecha and have the focus be on a gritty, realistic war from multiple perspectives.

The series was remade into a compilation of movies in the early 80’s and most currently, the release of Gundam Origin, which follow Tomino’s original novelization that is far darker and grim than the original series was.

The series did not prove to be popular during it’s original airing and was actually cancelled prematurely, having it’s run of 52 episodes cut down to only 43. Today it lives on as a very popular series and has become a part of the Japanese culture for decades to come.

Thanks for paving the way for all the series we have enjoyed over the years! 34 years ago today our obsession began…

(and as a bonus, a second series has it’s anniversary today too! so stay on the look out for another one popping up a bit later!)
