I mean, I don't watch Mecha shows and I can point out shows that did what people praise Eva for so much better.

Absolutely. Also, many stupid people cry “EVA RIPOFF” when they see RahXephon, not knowing that the show was actually based on Reideen the Brave from the 1970’s. Betterman was essentially a response to Eva, created by the team who made GaoGaiGar (they’re also in the same universe). I gotta say though, Betterman felt very… there. The characters felt really fresh, but the show didn’t do much for me.
