Just like every other mecha? Um every other mecha doesn’t have female pilots, a possible bisexual pilot, and actually delt with much heavier stuff then most mecha do such as dysfunctional father/son issues, suicidal tendancies, and so on. No, I don’t particularly think it’s the best anime ever made. But for the time it was made it sure threw a lot of mecha tropes out the window and it’s also inspired many?

Female pilots? Really? REALLY? There have been female pilots in mecha since Sayaka in Mazinger Z! I’m not sure what mecha anime you’re watching but female pilots tend to be preeeeeetty plentiful. Sure you don’t see them as often as the males, but it was CERTAINLY not new when EVA came along.

Possibly bisexual? Uhhh… who? Also *points to Gundam Wing*

Dysfunctional father/son issues? That… that’s kind of a defining trope in mecha anime. Sure, EVA took it to the extreme, but again, it dates back to Mazinger with Kouji and his weird cyborg dad. It’s inspired many tropes in the same way Mazinger did in the 70’s and Gundam in the 80’s. It’s no different than either of those in that regard.

If you’re gonna make judgement about the mecha genre, please watch some first.
