Awhile back the rumour was released, saying that a villain from the original television series will be in the film:
“It’s definitely a character that will make fans of TOS excited,” said the source via email. “Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta. Actually it’s one of those that I named. ”
Of the possible choices here, I think that Trelane has the most potential (and makes the most sense). The Q continuum in this film would be a wonderful throwback to canon Trek series as a whole - The Continuum spans pretty much through all television seriers (well, minus Enterprise).
Add the spoiler that Cumberbatch is joining the XII cast and I can QUITE easily envision him in the role of Trelane. And I’ll be honest: part of me just wants to see him in that jacket …
I really do hope he gets cast as Trelane, I can see him pulling it off so well both in costume and demeanor.
He has a lot of darker sides to his personality as well, so it won’t just be a happy fabulous romp in a Victorian costume either. We’ve seen how good he acts on both ends, but combining them in a major Hollywood role? That’d be something I’d love to see.
Oh my god it’ll be so amazing if he’s Trelane, for serious.
Though personally I was hoping to see Harry Mudd in the movie.
J. J. Abrams and his regular team always lie. Like hell. I still hope it’s Khan..

Ngggggh yes. I would go see the movie for this alone. If it was just 2 hours of Benedict acting like Trelane.
